In Case You Missed It – 10.16.24

Today we’re talking about where new credit unions come from, how a certain social media site might be a sinking ship for CUs, some rocket science, the will-they-won’t-they of branches, encouraging your members to vote and your fuzzy best friend’s fashion. Here’s what we noticed, in case you missed it:

CU De Novo Collective Foundation raising funds to charter new credit unions

The CU De Novo Collective Foundation is asking credit unions to start budgeting now to help the CU De Novo Collective Foundation raise $1M in 2025. As CU Cheerleader Extraordinaire Denise Wymore states, “It is possible today to charter a basic “cigar box” credit union with as little as $100K in capital. We have only chartered 8 credit unions in the last three years. Imagine chartering TEN in 2025! Let’s do this!”

We have nearly lost the ability to start new credit unions, which is a long-term threat to the vibrancy, uniqueness, value, and even the survival of the entire credit union movement. iDiz Inc. is proud to be part of the CU De Novo Collective, fighting for the future of credit unions.

“TwiXter” reach shrinking even for top CUs

The good folks over at The Financial Brand have maintained lists of social media clout (measured mostly as number of followers) for several years. The current list of the top CUs on the platform formerly known as Twitter is telling; even the top 100 credit unions still on “TwiXster” are mostly losing followers. We’ve seen many CUs exit the platform entirely, greatly reduce their pace of posting, and post less unique content (simply reposting content created for other platforms). Let’s just say the reasons why are obvious if you’ve glanced at tech news in the last few years.

SpaceX makes the catch

If you haven’t seen it already, watch the video of an enormous SpaceX booster returning to Earth, then hovering in a precise location to be caught midair by gigantic arms called “chopsticks”. What’s more, the Starship spacecraft re-entered and splashed down exactly where it was supposed to after the test flight. The scale and technology required for this feat are mind-boggling. It’s almost become routine for SpaceX’s much smaller Falcon boosters to return for precision landings and rapid re-use. By catching the 232 foot tall re-usable Super Heavy booster midair, SpaceX can eliminate the weight and complications of landing legs and make the booster far more efficient and powerful. Simply amazing.

What year is it?

I suppose articles touting “the death of the branch” and “the return of the branch” have always been a part of the financial press. Will we ever really make up our minds about branches? In any case, this recent Financial Brand article about a branch-based growth strategy and another about coin counting machines had us scrambling to verify we hadn’t fallen into a time-traveling wormhole. And of course, both made excellent points; even in 2024, physical presence and service still matter, a lot.

Do your members know when and where to vote?

While your members likely don’t all have the same political beliefs, encouraging your members to get out and vote makes for good social media content. It’s also a good way for your CU to encourage positive change in your community. Vote.org has an early voting calendar that will tell your members when (or if) early voting happens where they live. The website can also help them register to vote, check their voting registration and figure out where to go to vote.

Now you and your dog can make a fashion statement
