In Case You Missed It – 4.17.24
Emotionally-intelligent email. The value of negative feedback. Blue-collar Gen-Z. Free Fin-Ed content. How to describe your job, and some friendly advice about your eX. Here’s what we noticed, in case you missed it:
Emotional Intelligence… in Email?
You know how you just delete some promotional emails without even reading them? I recently got an email from one such sender asking if I’d like to skip their upcoming barrage of Mother’s Day content, since “Mother’s Day can be an emotional time.” What a kind and sensitive thing to do. And smart. More of this, please. Give people more control over how they interact with you. Instead of unsubscribing entirely, maybe they’d rather just fine-tune.
Can we talk?
Speaking of emails… we filled out on online survey recently for a service we use daily, and were quite candid about what’s working well and what could be better. And we soon got an email back from the company’s CEO asking to have a talk to better understand what we need and how to improve the product. Impressive. Negative feedback is incredibly valuable research. Make sure you’re listening.
Gen Z Featuring More Blue Collars & Side Hustles
Here’s an interesting article from our pals over at Financial Brand covering the implications of fewer Gen Z-ers heading to four year colleges. The main reason is obvious – college has become ludicrously expensive, so it’s not accessible to many, or just isn’t worth it. So it’s important to have a plan to reach new younger members working in the trades, attending vocational or community colleges, getting two-year degrees, and juggling side hustles and gig work. Not to mention those starting their own businesses. Do you have the policies, products, and tech to keep up?
Need content for Financial Education or your social media?
Take a look at these charts from Visual Capitalist. This one shows the power of compound interest (using an example of investing $100/month), while another one shows how much the S&P 500 has outperformed all other investments over the last 35 years or so. Need something more FeelGood? Here’s a map of Global Happiness or America’s Most Popular Beers (according to different generations). They allow you to use their content without a license, as long as you attribute, link back, and don’t change anything.
It’s not just you
If you’re in Marketing (like we are), you’ve probably noticed that not very many people can actually define what it is that you do. After all, we tend to do a lot of things. Things that may seem rather ethereal to others. Well, at least you aren’t the only one. But as Seth Godin says, maybe it’s time to be more obvious. “Call it what it is. Say what it’s for. Describe what you do.”
Might be time to break it off
Look, we get it. You’ve been with X for a long time, even before it changed it’s name. You stuck around when it started hanging out with its new, weird-but-very-rich friend. You stuck around when it started asking you for money to keep you “official.” But you’ve noticed that a lot of X’s more tolerable friends have jumped ship. Now, the rich guy is saying you might end up paying just to use the basic functions of the website, and that’s a little beyond the pale. It’s probably time to call it quits. Because it’s not you, it’s your eX.
