Roll Out the Rainbow Carpet

Credit unions have always done a great job of including minorities of all kinds in their membership, boards, and management. And while many CUs have quietly included domestic partners in their definitions of family, very few have specifically marketed to gays and lesbians.

Like any other minority marketing, subtlety and sensitivity are paramount. (Understatement of the year, huh?) A good place to start is by making connections with gay and lesbian organizations in your community. Some credit unions have even added these organizations to their FOM, gaining access to hundreds or thousands of potential members. A group of people with well-above-average incomes and education levels, we might point out.

And of course, (another huge understatement coming), reaching out to gays and lesbians may be a tiny bit controversial at your credit union. But it's worth thinking about.
